CARING FOR YOUR BABY'S SKIN.
The birth of a new born heralds joy, celebrations and happiness from the mother, father, families and friends. Everyone comes around to welcome this new bundle of joy into the world; many bearing gifts with them. People marvel at the softness, smoothness and fragility of the new born's skin. For this admiration to continue the mother must care for the baby's skin relentlessly. Optimal care of the baby's skin protects her from skin rashes, sunburn, eczema, nappy rash, prickly heat rashes, milia, or irritation: absence of which keeps your baby comfortable, smiling and happy. You can care for your baby' skin by:
BATHING: As much as you desire to keep your baby's skin clean, you don't have to become obsessed with the act. Bear in mind that your baby'skin is tender and fragile making it highly sensitive. To keep her sensitive skin hydrated, bath her in lukewarm water for a short period. Avoid chemicals disguised as soap, use shampoo or milder soap to bath her. Don't soak her in soapy water for too long. Never form the habit of rubbing your baby's body to dry after bathing, this can lead to unwanted scratches. Always pat dry your baby after every bath.
KEEP THE SUN AWAY: Babies receive higher dose of chemicals when compared to adults, reason is that they have more skin surfaces than the adults. This fact makes babies more prone to adverse reactions. Babies under 6 months especially, should be kept away from the sun in the shade, protective clothing too help a lot. Babies above 6 months can be protected by using sunscreen on their entire bodies (sunscreen with "broad spectrum" label)
LAUNDRY: Skin rashes or irritation are mostly traced to the allergens present in the detergent used in washing your baby's clothing e.g bedding, blankets, towels, flannel, etc. Your baby will react to this allergens, thereby the appearance of the rashes. To keep your baby's tender and sensitive skin away from this allergens always go for milder baby detergent. Remember baby's tender skin is prone to allergies in the first few months.
PAY RAPT ATTENTION TO THE DIAPER: Your baby's bottom side needs serious attention. To avoid skin irritation in this region, usually referred to as nappy rash; always ensure that her diaper is not too tight on her for the flow of air. Change the diaper as soon as your baby soils it with poo or wee, never allow a dirty diaper to stay on your baby's bottom for too long. This can cause skin infections, clean your baby with wash cloth during every diaper change. Avoid applying diaper cream on her bottom while wet. Create diaper free time at least for 45 minutes everyday, your adorable will thank you for the feel of that fresh air.
WASH AND WEAR: Wash new clothing in order to soften them before wearing them on your baby's tender skin; this will do a lot in protecting her delicate skin from irritants.
While most skin rashes clear away without treatments after few days of their emergence; persistent skin rashes or irritation that are bumpy, dry or scaly might be symptoms of a serious skin infection. Thus, your baby might need to see a paediatrician for proper care and treatments.
