OKRO

Okro is a popular plant product that is highly nutritious and medicinal. The English countries know it has “ladies’ fingers”, Yorubas call it “ila”, Igbos call it “Okuru”. It  belongs to the vegetable family, thus it is a vegetable.

The mucilaginous nature of Okro can be proven by its slimy outcome when cooked. It is  economically within reach. It can be cooked, pickled, eaten raw or included in salads.

Okro in its raw form contains 90% water, 2% protein, 7% carbohydrate, vitamin c, vitamin k, foliate, magnesium, thiamin, and unsaturated fats.

The benefits of Okro to the human body can not be overlooked.  Some of them are as follows;

It regulates the blood sugar levels: the fiber found in it, curbs the rate at which sugar is being absorbed from the intestinal tract.

It aids digestion: the high content of water in Okro helps in lubricating the large intestines thereby making the passage of waste from the human body very easy.

It prevents constipation: this is made possible by the ease of passing out of waste from the body.

It alleviates depression: it contains substances which help in warding off depression and stress. This substances are called anti-depressant.
It aids the circulatory system: this is made possible through the replacement of the blood plasma.

It inhibits asthma symptoms: it’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory contents help in preventing the development of asthma symptoms.

It reduces the risk of cancer: the large content of dietary fibres found in Okro reduces the calories intakes and the ability of nitric oxide build up in the blood, countering lipid fats, thereby reducing the risk of cancers in the human body.

Despite all the nutritional and medicinal values found in Okro,  a recent study as shown that it should be taken with caution if not totally avoided in men of reproductive age. According to Dr. Ochuko Erikainuire, a senior officer at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi, Lagos state Posits that “Okro though very nutritious, can lead to infertility in men of reproductive age”. He further explains  that the Gossypol substance found in Okro inhibits sperm production and motility by blocking several enzymes that are highly important in energy metabolism in sperm and sperm producing cells.
