HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CHILD FROM COLD THIS SEASON
Cold is a general feeling of unwellness which is usually accompanied by cough, runny nose and sore throat. It begins with a build up of mucus in the child's throat, followed by a postnatal drip. The mucus turns darker and thicker after sometime.
Cold is a condition that cannot be addressed with the use of an antibiotic, the reason being that cold is a viral illness. Colds are not totally dangerous in healthy children, they are pointers to show that your child's system is active. Colds go away between 4 to 10 days without treatment.
The cold season usually spans between September - April. These periods, children are highly susceptible to colds. There are symptoms to show that your child is catching a cold. Some of the symptoms include:
Sneezing (with eyes turning red)
Fatigue
Fever (not often)
Cough
Stomach pain
Sore throat
Diarrhoea and vomiting are experienced in some cases if the viruses attack your child's throat, ears, sinuses and bronchial tubes.
Colds are caused by viruses. These viruses are carried and spread by unseen germs. Children contact or get infected with cold by coming in contact with the common carriers of these viruses. The common carriers of the viruses are objects and surfaces, these carriers serve as the breeding grounds of these iruses.
However, there are various ways or measures that can be adopted by mothers to prevent their treasures from cold this season. Some of the measures are explained below:
Pay serious attention to hygiene: Since objects and surfaces around us are the common breeding grounds of viruses that cause cold in children, parents should endeavour to go extra miles in ensuring that objects like toys, books, remote, pens, keys, computer keyboards, dining table, kitchen counter, etc are properly and consistently cleaned. This would go a long way in protecting your child from coming in contact with these viruses. They can also be disinfected through the use of disinfectants eg Dettol.
Sensitise your children about hygiene: To prevent your children from cold, sensitive them about the importance of hand washing. For those that are not of age to do it themselves, wash their hands with warm water and soap. This will help to get rid of all unseen germs on their hands.
Make handwashing a habit: Teach your child to make handwashing a habit, let them know that they must wash their hands after every visit to the rest room, before every meal and after playing at school/home. The hand washing should be done with the use of sanitizer, but this must be supervised by an adult, so as to ensure that children don't ingest harmful chemicals found in the sanitizer as a result of not washing it off thoroughly.
Keep your child away from sick people: Your child can easily contact cold simply by touching someone who is infected with cold or by touching an object/surface touched by this person. If one of your children has a cold, try as much as possible to avoid the other ones coming in contact with him/her, this must be done in love. You should also be careful not to use same hands you used in cleaning your cold infected child's nose on the ones who are not infected. This is possible by consistent washing of hands after each care session.
Humidify your home: Studies have proved that viruses thrive in environments where there is a very low humidity. When the air that your children breath in is full of dust, they are bound to contact colds. The recommended percentage of humidity for a healthy home is between 40% - 80%. Avoid dust as much as possible in your home, so that they don't settle on the surfaces and objects.
Parents are advised by FDA and drugmakers to avoid administering on their children who are under the age of 4 years over the counter cough and cold medicine. Naturally these symptoms disappear after about 4 to 10 days. But if these symptoms persist with serious manifestation of discomforts, call your paediatrician.
