EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING
"Exclusive" according to the Oxford Dictionaries, means "restricted ", "solely", "not admitting to other things".
Exclusive breastfeeding can be defined as a process of giving only breast milk from mother to infant or babies during the first six months of the baby's life. It is called exclusive breastfeeding because the mother shuts out all other sources of nutrients to the baby i.e no juice, no baby formular, no water. The baby's survival is based solely on the breast milk from the mother'so breast.
According to WHO, infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life in order to achieve optimal growth, development and good health. She however posits that exclusive breast feeding does not shut the door against the administration of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), drops and syrups (vitamins, minerals and medicines). These also are key players in the healthy growth and development of babies.
The human breast milk contains fat, sugar, water and protein. These nutrients are balanced optimally to aid the growth and development of babies.
Colostrum is very special, it is the first portion of milk produced by the mother's breasts between the first and third day of delivery. This milk is very essential the life of the babies/infants, because of its high content of nutrients and antibodies. These nutrients and antibodies help protect the babies from infection, they also help baby's digestive system to grow and function properly.
Breast milk is very good for babies/infants because of the biochemical reactions it triggers in them. These reactions defend themselves against infectious diseases.
BENEFITS OF EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING
Exclusive breastfeeding is a mutually beneficial exexcise or engagement for both mother and child, because it is profitable to the babies as well as the mothers.
Benefits To Babies: Exclusive breastfeeding's benefits to babies are as follows:
- It helps in preventing or reducing mortality rate in infants which usually arises as a result of diarrhoea and other infections when babies are either partially breastfed or not breastfed at all.
- It aids the growth of straight and healthy teeth in babies
- It boosts the cognitive development of the babies
- It prevents the risk of diarrhoea in babies
- It helps to reduce the risk of the development of chronic diseases in children which usually develop during childhood diseases such as diabetes, cancer, asthma etc.
Benefits To Mothers:
- It reduces the risks of mothers developing breast, ovarian and uterine cancers
- It promotes emotional bond between mothers and babies, thereby increasing the mother's confidence.
- It helps the mother's womb return quickly to its normal size, which indirectly reduces the risk of loss of blood after childbirth.
- It helps mothers to lose the postpartum pounds after birth easily.
- It also prevents post parturition depression in mothers.
It is eminent that babies are introduced to other foods, complimentary foods after their first six months. That does not imply that they should be given just any how foods. Rather they should be introduced to foods that are rich in essential nutrients; energy, protein and micro nutrients which will complement the nutrients derived from breast milk.
